Latest Updates from Our Project:
Kickstarter Closed / PRE-ORDER STORE OPEN
almost 4 years ago
– Fri, Jun 19, 2020 at 04:03:27 AM
Hi everyone,
The Kickstarter campaign has now finished! This is only the beginning for Roll & Play though. Now it is time for me to work hard and continue to design, write and illustrate the rest of the book – I cannot wait to get cracking. In case you missed the announcement yesterday, Roll & Play will be back again next year with a new book focusing on a different genre other than fantasy... but more on that in the coming months!
So... What Now?
Sit back, relax, and know that you bagged yourself a copy of Roll & Play! Both the digital and physical copies of Roll & Play (as well as your add-ons) will be shipping in December, and the Playable Races and Campaign Builder PDFs will follow around a month afterwards. In the next two weeks you will receive a 'backer survey' from a website called BackerKit who will be managing and collating all of the pledges. On your survey you can confirm (or upgrade) your pledge and add anything extra to your order, like a Game Master's Notebook!
In the meantime before this happens, Kickstarter will begin collecting funds from you. Now is a great time to check and make sure your payment details are all up-to-date. If payments fail, Kickstarter could cancel your pledge, so please check before it becomes an issue.
THE FREE DICE COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED. The winner will be randomly selected and announced in the next few days – stay tuned!
Did You Miss Out?
Don't worry! There will be a second print run early next year, and if you pre-order now you can have your hands on a physical/digital copy as soon as the second edition is launched. The book, the playable races and the extra add-ons are now available to order in the Pre-Order Store for those who didn't pledge during the campaign!
Thank You
I want to say another HUGE thank you to everyone who backed this project from the smallest pledge to the largest, you all brought this project to life and turned it into something much bigger than I could have possibly imagined. Your faith in Roll & Play will be rewarded, as I'm going to create an awesome book for you all which will be jam-packed full of tables, generators and setting inspiration. You're going to love it, and I can't wait to send you all a copy towards the end of the year. Follow Roll & Play on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for behind-the-scenes previews over the coming months.
Thank you also to the producers of the project, your contributions have been awesome and really enriched the content. You will be proud to have your name in the front, I guarantee it!
I will be sharing Kickstarter updates as the project develops, and I will be in touch again soon when the surveys are released. If you have any questions or comments until then, please feel free to message me on Kickstarter or send me an email at [email protected].
Until next time, keep rolling,
Sam.
What's Next for Roll & Play? E-Commerce? Translations?
– Thu, Jun 18, 2020 at 12:10:38 AM
Guys, this has been an incredible ride. As we are entering the last twenty-four hours of this campaign I want to sincerely thank each and every backer for turning this project into something bigger than I could have ever imagined.
The Kickstarter campaign is coming to a close, but Roll & Play is only just beginning. Please see below for some important updates:
Roll & Play Availability
For anyone who missed out on the Kickstarter campaign, the Pre-Order Store will be going live shortly after the campaign closes. Kickstarter backers will receive their books/digital purchases in December 2020, followed shortly after by the Playable Races and Campaign Builder. Pre-Order backers will receive their purchases when Roll & Play is released to the world in (approx.) March 2021.
In the first quarter of next year, I hope to have a website up and running for Roll & Play which will include an e-commerce platform to purchase the books/add-ons worldwide.
Retail Stock
Roll & Play has been picked up by several retailers worldwide who will be stocking the book in 2021, more will hopefully be confirmed in the coming weeks but so far Roll & Play will be sold in the following locations:
Pe Metawe Games – Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
The Game Chamber – London, Ontario, Canada
Great Escape Games – Rocklin, California, United States
Noble Knight Games – Fitchburg, Wisconsin, United States
GUF Games – Various Locations, Victoria, Australia
Translations
Roll & Play has backers across the world from the United Kingdom to New Zealand, from Switzerland to South Africa, from the USA to Singapore. Because of its global appeal, many backers have asked me whether Roll & Play will be available in different languages.
This is something which I am hoping to deliver next year, but there is no timeline just yet. I want to do translations well, and this involves deciding on the languages, finding professional translators, sending the text to native proofreaders and flowing the text back into the documents (which often needs to be re-arranged afterwards). For that reason, I have decided to dedicate an appropriate amount of time to this in the future once fulfilment of the Kickstarter is complete.
Please stay tuned for further updates in the coming months about translations.
Roll & Play Will Return
As I said at the beginning, your support and backing have turned Roll & Play from a pet project which solved my own GM problems to something that will be enjoyed by GMs all over the world.
This project has reinforced my belief that generators and tables are a valuable tool that bring a new dimension to tabletop roleplaying games. But, there are so many exciting campaign settings and genres out there which have specific needs of their own – so, Roll & Play will be back next year for a sequel! Next time it will not be Fantasy-based, it will focus on a different genre... so watch this space!
Thanks once more for making this dream a reality, you are all awesome.
All the best, keep rolling,
Sam.
NEW Pledge Level Announcement – The Digital Goblin
almost 4 years ago
– Wed, Jun 17, 2020 at 10:08:14 PM
Hi everyone,
As the kickstarter campaign approaches its final days, I have been spending some time thinking about how I can make sure I have a complete product that exceeds all expectations of the amazing backers who have made the project what it is today – the response to Roll & Play has been greater than I could have ever imagined.
One of the things that the growth of this project has brought, is a wide range of backers from different parts of the world with unique needs and interests. As a creator, this presents an exciting (and sometimes daunting) challenge of making a product I believe in, whilst giving backers the product they can fully enjoy.
I received an encouraging and supportive message from a backer yesterday (thank you Joe Bruna) which got me past my mental block about how to better reach digital GMs as well as those that use a combination of print and digital. This in turn led me to develop an entirely NEW, totally awesome pledge level: THE DIGITAL GOBLIN!
In this new £25 pledge level you will receive the following rewards:
Acknowledgement on the Imprint Page
A Set of Digital Wallpapers
A Digital Roll & Play eBook for Viewing Across Your Devices
A Print-Optimised PDF of Roll & Play for Home Printing
That's right! The Digital Goblin is a Hobgoblin pledge which has been specifically made for GMs that use digital devices or binders to run their home games. In addition to the full colour, digitally optimised Roll & Play eBook, you will receive an adapted version of Roll & Play which I am designing for home printing, the detailed backgrounds and colours will be simplified so you can print without compromising warped ink-heavy paper, or text that might not show up on the backgrounds.
The generator cards are still an exclusive reward for backers that pledge at a higher level, but can now be accessed in the Digital Goblin bundle. Backers who have pledged at Hobgoblin level or above will also get access to the PDF versions of the 5 exclusive generator cards for free.
ALL backers will be able to purchase the Print-Optimised PDF of Roll & Play for £9, and Printable Notebook Sheets for £3 as add-ons to their pledge when filling out their backer surveys (these will be sent out within 2 weeks of the campaign closing). If an eBook comes as part of your pledge level you will be able to choose whether you receive a sunset orange version, arctic blue version, or a print-optimised version of the book.
Please see below for a comparison between the eBook and print-optimised sample pages of Roll & Play:
If you have already pledged and would like to upgrade your eBook level to the Digital Goblin or Hobgoblin levels, just click 'Manage My Pledge' on the project page.
All the best, have a great day,
Sam.
Playable Races, Fully Illustrated!
– Wed, Jun 17, 2020 at 08:13:21 PM
Hi everyone,
We only have 2 days left until the Roll & Play campaign comes to an end, so what better time to share the fully illustrated four NEW playable races which will come free with your Roll & Play pledge (thanks to unlocking the Playable Races stretch goal)! Character artist Sketchgoblin has been working really hard to turn these around before the campaign ends, and he has absolutely nailed it. You're going to love them! Without further ado, let me introduce you to the:
Blackhorns
Description:The phrase ‘never lock horns with a Blackhorn’ refers not only to this race of humanoid beetle’s strength, but also their stubbornness and brutish behaviour. Their daunting carapaces range from midnight-purple to pearlescent green, and can be up to six-inches thick in places. An immense horn bursts out of their forehead which they use not only as a sign of prowess, but also to smash their opponents into the air.
Oozlings
Description:The translucent, cold and gelatinous form of an Oozling is not difficult to recognise. Although originally derived from humankind as a result of a magical mishap, their black eyes and lack of facial features are a stark contrast to the make-up of a human. Roughly every decade a fully-grown Oozling must ‘divide’ into two smaller halves, thus multiplying into two Oozlings, each with their own distinct personalities.
Hederans
Description: A Hederan’s outer skin is made from thick bark, but within this shell is a complex green musculature. Branches protrude from their long, oval heads and upper body in seemingly random directions, and ivy, moss, funghi and weeds find a home across their bodies. Hederans lead a solitary life, once they have grown from a seedling into an adult they leave their families.
Borsukk
Description:The Borsukk are a proud and somewhat tribal race of badger humanoids – they are famously described by outsiders as having only three senses: smell, hearing and loyalty. Black and white striped fur covers their head, and charcoal grey fur covers the rest of their bodies. Respect is hard to gain from a Borsukk, but once an ally is found they will defend them with tenacity and devotion.
So, there we have it! Let me know what you think in the comments below :) I'm super excited to put these together for you. Which one are you most excited to play as?
The four races will be fully fleshed-out in a printable PDF (including lore, traits, name suggestions and features), and sent to all backers around a month after delivery of the books. For those who have missed out on the campaign, they will also be available as PDFs in the Pre-Order Store (£3 each, or all four for £10).
All the best, keep rolling,
Sam.
End of Week 5 (5500 Backers, The Final Countdown!)
– Mon, Jun 15, 2020 at 02:25:51 AM
Hi everyone,
We made it! This week is the final week of the campaign, and as I am writing this we have only 4 days to go! I can't believe how quickly it has flown by, and what a whirlwind it has been. Thank you so much for your backing and your support along the way – you are all awesome.
With some help from our pledge manager BackerKit, we are able to offer a whole host of add-ons which will be available once the project ends. If you would like to purchase any of these items after the campaign, just select them when filling out your backer survey (which will be sent to you within 2 weeks of the campaign finishing, max. 3 extra per item per backer):
Extra physical copies of Roll & Play, £14 each
Extra eBooks, £9 each
Extra sets of the 3 themed bookmarks, £3 per set
Extra sets of the 5 exclusive generator cards, £5 per set (Hobgoblin and above only)
Orange and blue Roll & Play themed pencils, £1 each
All extra add-ons will add a minor shipping chargeto your existing order, proportionate to the extra weight of the package.
It has been a really exciting week this week, as Roll & Play has been picked up by several retailers internationally. Towards the end of the project, I will let you know where you can find the book around the world – you might be able to find a copy in your local game store next year!
As well as catching the attention of the retailers, the project was also featured on the fantastic board games show Shut Up And Sit Down. Tom, one of the hosts of the show, described Roll & Play as a 'robust and beautifully presented system for the GM who is just tired of players refusing to fit into the nice little box you’ve made for them'. I'm glad to hear that you like it Tom, thank you!
There will be a few more updates before the campaign has finished, and I can't wait to share with you some more exciting developments and news very soon.
Until next time, I hope you have all had a great weekend,
